Whilst some dvd recorders can play just a set selection of DVD regional formats, there are many machines which can play them all. Obviously it's a preferable option to be able to play all the different regions.

If your ordering cheap DVDs from retailers based in the Far East or USA, or buying DVDs from eBay sellers based outside Europe, then it's a must. A breakdown of the regional codes is provided below,


0 - Worldwide, a region which hasnt been given an official setting
1 - North America
2 - European Union, Middle East
3 - Southeast Asia,
4 - Australia, Central America, New Zealand, Oceania, Caribbean, South America
5 - Africa, Mongolia, North Korea
6 - China
7 - Reserved for future designation
8 - International waters and airspace, for such in aircraft and cruise ships, etc.
